The first and second grade classes at Hillcrest were so very excited to take our first trip to the STEM Center. Missy Wooley, STEM Center facilitator read us a book entitled, The Diary of a Wombat. We really enjoyed the robotics lab. After hearing the story and paying close attention to the sequence, we learned how to program our Beebot to follow a set of directions and correctly follow the sequence we programmed. In the Engineering Design room, we developed and built a way to protect our homes from a wombat’s destruction. There were some VERY creative designs made from the materials provided. We also did a Jigsaw activity that enabled us to become experts on the wombat. We not only designed, illustrated and annotated a banner with these facts, but we also got to present them to our classmates.
We had great Louisiana Tech students who helped us in each of the rotations.
We were so impressed with the STEM Center and can’t wait to make return visits throughout the rest of the school year. We were excited to share our experience with our Kindergarten friends who will have their first visit in March.
